Year-Round Events

Surabaya



Reog Ponorogo

Performances where the dancers carry a very heavy, ornamented tiger head with peacock feathers. This dance depicts a fight between a tiger and two noblemen on horseback.

Kerapan Sapi (Bull Races), Madura
This is very popular sport and spectacle is held regularly at least twice a month at Bangkalan on the island of Madura, about half an hour by ferry from Surabaya. Bull racing is a great event in Madura especially the annual races for the islands championship which are usually held by the local administration after the harvest time in September and October. The finals are held at Pamekasan capital of the island, once a year. Special races can be organized, given three days advance notice.

Kuda Kepang (Bamboo Horse), Kediri
A dance performance originating from the town of Kediri. Male dances falling into a trance ride on bamboo horses, and eat grass flowers, rice husks and pieces of glass.

West Sumatera

Wild Hog Hunt (50 Kota Regency and Adam Regency).

Hunt for wild hogs in the forest of West Sumatera using dogs for tracking. A sport of the village people in the neighbouring area. The hogs are hunted every Sunday, in Agam Regency and every Tuesday in Limapuluh Kota as they destroy farm lands.

Minang Traditional Performances
Performances of traditional Minang are staged at 8.00 pm. Daily and at the end of the show, the audience are welcome to participate.

Randau (Every Sunday)
Folk dances and theatre.

Pacu Itik (Every Sunday)
In this traditional duck race, there are 10 ducks at each round. The winner is the first to reach the line.

Water Buffalo Fighting (Kota Baru)
An event held every Tuesday and Saturday by the people of the village of Kuta Laweh and Kota Baru located near the town of Bukittinggi. This event, a popular past time of the people, has remained popular through the years and is still held often. The purpose of this event is to held develop cattle breeding. Two bulls are pitted against each other, and when one of them runs off, it has lost the fight.


Bird Watching

A jeep from the gate to the Way Kanan Conversation area at dawn to take a quite look at the birds and other wild animals, and stay the night at lodgings within the area.

Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi
Toraja Death Feast


The Toraja dead rituals are elaborates feasts which hold the greatest significance in the society. The more elaborated the rituals, the higher the familys gratitude and esteem considered to be for departed member. The rituals begin with the taking off the coffin from the family house, accompanied by the tau-tau, a wooden effigy of the dead person.

Traditional welcoming dances are performed for the guests an bull, cock and kick fighting (sisemba) are featured. The mass slaughter of buffaloes and pigs takes place afterwards. The final part of the ritual is when the corpse is taken to its final resting place in cave high up in the cliffs. A funeral feast for a high ranking Torajan often last for many days.

Traditional Sundanese Dances

Pakuan Restaurant of Hotel Panghegar, Jalan Asia Afrika at night from 8 pm till midnight and at?Mang Udjo, Jalan Padasuka, from 2 ? 5 pm (phone: 62-22-7201587) are the hosts of Sundanese traditional dances and music.

Wayang Golek/Wooden Puppets
Performed at RRI Auditorium, Jalan Diponegoro 61, every Saturday night from 1 - 5 am. Wooden puppets are made of wood and are quite three-dimensional, unlike the thin puppets made of leather.

Subang - West Java

Gotong Sisingaan
A traditional art festival, wooden effigies of lions in colorful decoration carried out by many people. This art is often performed art circumcision or other ceremonies on request.



Jakarta


Wayang Orang / Dance Drama
You can see the performance of some dancers dressed in traditional Javanese costume in Performing Arts Theatre every Wednesday starting at 8.15 pm till midnight. Gamelan, Indonesian traditional musical instrument, becomes the sound and music for this dance drama.The stories performed are usually taken from Mahabrata and Ramayana Hindu epics.
Ketoprak
A modernized version of Wayang Orang, ketoprak has gained more popularity these days for its versatility. It's also accompanied with gamelan music but simpler in costume and dialogue. You can see ketoprak show at Gedung Kesenian Theatre every Wednesday and Thursday evening starting at 8 pm.

Traditional Indonesian Dance

Staged in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah every Sunday from 9 am - 2 pm and at Ancol Art Market every Saturday evening or Sunday morning, traditional dances from various regions in Indonesia are bound to mesmerize the beholders.

Wayang Kulit / Leather Puppet Shadow Play
Performed every second and last Saturday night of the month at the Central Museum in Jakarta, wayang kulit offers unusual and unique sight.

Gamelan Music
Every Sunday morning, Sundanese Gamelan music is performed in Central Museum.

Pameran Seni Rupa/ Art Exhibition
You can see permanent exhibition at Balai Seni Rupa, Jalan Taman Fatahillah, Jakarta. Open daily.

Oceanarium
You can watch sea lions and dolphins performing superb acts at Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, every day, from 9 am to 6 pm.



Keong Emas Imax Theatre, TMII
'Beatiful Indonesia', the Imax film, was initiated by former First Lady Tien Soeharto to present the beauty of this nation from many different aspects. The Cinema theatre screens 'Beautiful Indonesia' Mondays to Fridays from 11 am to 3 pm. Sundays and holidays from 10 am to 4 pm while on every Saturday it performs a special theme.

Semarang, Central Java

Wayang Kulit / Leather Puppet Shadow Show

The show is held at RRI Semarang, Jalan Achmad Yani, from 9 pm – 5 am the following morning at the third week of each month on Saturday night. The plays are based on some episodes of Ramayana and Mahabharata epics

Wayang Golek / Wooden Puppets


You can view wayang golek performances in Agastya Art Institute—School for Narrators, Jalan Gedung Kiwo MJ I, performed every Saturday from 3 - 5 pm. At Nitour Inc. Jalan KH A. Dahlan 71, it is performed every day except Sunday from 11 am – 1 pm.

Wayang Orang / Dance Drama

The performance is held in Hotel Arjuna Plaza, Jalan P. Mangkubumi, every Thursday from 7 – 9 pm.

Ramayana Ballet

Unique and famous, this ballet is presented by 250 professional dancers at the open air theatre of Prambanan / Loro Jonggrang temple. The entire Ramayana epics is concised into 4 (four) episodes. Each night, one episode, and presented from 7.30 to 9.30 pm.

At Dalem Pujokusuman, performed every Monday and Friday from 8 – 9.30 pm.

Jatilan Kuda Lumping
Bamboo horse dance, at Desa Wisata Bugisan, Prambanan. Bookings must be made at least two hours in advance if you want to watch this show.

Bali

Temple Festival


Temple Festival, Bali
Taking place throughout Bali, such as the Odalan or temple?s anniversary celebrations. Offerings are carried to the temple. There are purification ceremonies and a fair. At night, performances of sacred dances can be seen. Wayang kulit and gamelan music are also performed.
